Fire-Safe Planting

Planting "the right plant in the right place" is important in landscaping, and it can influence plant flammability. When selecting landscape plants, consider their light, water, and soil requirements.

In addition to plant selection, plant spacing and maintenance are important in maintaining your defensible space. Plants that are stressed have a higher percentage of dead leaves and branches, which significantly increases their flammability. While some plants are more resistant to fire than others, any plant will burn under certain conditions.

If you are a homeowner in Contra Costa County, you can get advice on selecting appropriate plants for the range of conditions in your yard. Call the Contra Costa Master Gardener Help Desk, 925-646-6586, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon.

The Fire District is working with the Contra Costa Master Gardener program to develop firewise landscape plant lists for the many different types of soils and climates found in Contra Costa County.

This information is provided to help you select and maintain fire-safe plants around your home.
