Firefighting and rescue work is physically and mentally demanding. Candidates must be in excellent health and have no conditions that would restrict their ability to safely perform fire suppression and rescue work. Candidates should have strong ethics, moral character, good judgment and excellent communication skills, dedication to public service, self-improvement, and career development.
Step 1 Minimum Qualifications:
Confirm you meet the minimum requirements listed below.
Age: At least 18 years of age at the time of application.
Education: A high school diploma, GED equivalent or high school proficiency certificate.
Licenses: A valid California Driver License (at time of appointment), a valid California Emergency Medical Technician certificate. Candidates with an EMT certificate issued by National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) must obtain a California EMT
certificate prior to the start of the Contra Costa Fire, Fire Academy. Visit the California

Current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Card. The CPAT is a standardized test that is administered by the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CFFJAC). For more information about the CPAT, including how to take the test visit.

Step 2 Application:
All candidates must complete a Contra Costa County Application during the application period, available at www.governmentjobs.com/

Step 3 Interviews:
Qualified candidates are selected to participate in a first interview.
Step 4 Background Investigation:
Candidates will move on to the background investigation. This includes fingerprinting, interview with a background investigator, and field investigation.
Step 5 Conditional Job Offer:
Successful candidates will receive a conditional job offer
Step 6 Medical and Psychological Evaluation:
Candidates that accept the conditional offer will be required to complete thorough medical and psychological evaluations.
Step 7 Final Job Offer:
Successful candidates are issued a final job offer and welcomed to the 18 week long Training Academy.
Step 8 Training Academy (18 weeks):
Complete a physically and academically rigorous Training Academy.
